Rotary Club of Morganton Hosts Community Blood Drive with American Red Cross

The Rotary Club of Morganton partnered with the American Red Cross to host a community blood drive Saturday, March 7, at the Morganton Community House. The event brought together local residents committed to helping patients in need, resulting in the donation of 28 units of blood.

Each unit of donated blood has the potential to help save multiple lives, as blood is separated into components such as red cells, plasma, and platelets that can be used for different medical treatments. According to the American Red Cross, one blood donation can help up to three patients. Blood donations are vital for hospitals treating trauma victims, surgical patients, cancer patients, and individuals with chronic illnesses. In the United States, someone needs blood every two seconds, yet only about 3% of eligible donors give blood each year.

Local blood supplies across the Carolinas have recently faced significant strain due to winter illnesses, weather disruptions, and seasonal declines in donations. The Red Cross has warned that blood supplies in the region remain at critically low levels, making community blood drives especially important.

Community members interested in donating blood in the future can find upcoming blood drives and schedule appointments through the American Red Cross website (www.redcrossblood.org) or the American Red Cross Blood Donor app.
